Perseverance Conquers All
Perseverantia vincit omnia

Over the last weeks we have been celebrating as a Padua College community rite of passages, such as the Valedictory Mass that acknowledge the end of our Year 12 graduates six-year journey at Padua College. Now they commence their next journey, by joining our 126-year-old alumni.

We have heard frequently references to our college motto by student leaders or staff - Perseverance Conquers All or in the original Latin, Perseverantia vincit omnia.

  • What can be a takeaway for our graduates from our college motto? As they leave the school gates?
  • What can be a takeaway for the younger students still active in their journey at Padua College?
  • What can be a takeaway for our families from our college motto?

We can draw inspiration from the story and legacy of the Mercy Sisters who displayed perseverance in setting up a Catholic place of learning on the Mornington Peninsula in 1898. And conquered, with a now flourishing Catholic school, the largest in the Archdiocese of Melbourne with over 2600 students.

What is a message for the now, for our current students and recent graduates?

Persevere comes from the Latin root persevereus which means to continue steadfastly, to persist. A message could be that:

  • Perseverance is more than endurance.
  • It is to have a belief that what you are looking for is going to happen.
  • It is to have a purpose.
  • It is a willingness to step into the unknown.
  • It is to have a spirit that refuses to accept the failure of quitting.

Especially for our recent graduates looking to the future and current students who have part time jobs, perseverance is something that many employers want to see in their employees. This is because they want someone who will not give up easily. These are the sorts of people who get the job done, no matter what.

Year 11 student off to Rome and London!

Thomas McInnes (Year 11) has been successful to gain a place on the prestigious ACU school leavers study program. He is one of ten lucky Year 11 students from Melbourne Catholic secondary schools. The program involves living on campus at the ACU Rome for 2 weeks and 1 week in central London learning about the history of the Catholic Christian Tradition, both inside and outside the classroom in these two great European cities. A special part of the program will be one night in Assisi learning about St Francis and St Clare. Thomas will be on the program from November 16 till December 7.

Padua College Catholic Identity pulse check

A few weeks ago, the Mission and Identity Team (MIT) sent all staff a Catholic Identity pulse check survey of Padua College. We believe any feedback is good feedback and frequent feedback creates good culture. If you would like full access to look at our results, please email– mwilliams@padua.vic.edu.au
