On Monday 16 October, students and staff from all three campuses gathered together in the Mornington Campus gym to celebrate the final College assembly for our graduating Year 12 class of 2023. This was an opportunity for us all as a community to acknowledge and congratulate those students who received these awards and we hope that this celebration was inspirational for all our Year 7 – Year 11 students.
A number of student awards were presented at this assembly, including the Best in Subject Awards,, along with a number of musical acts and the recitation of the Year 12 pledge. Following the assembly our Year 12 students enjoyed Celebration Day and on Wednesday 18 October we joined with students and parents of Year 12 students to celebrate the Year 12 Graduation Mass, Graduation Ceremony, and our Valedictory event held at the New Peninsula Baptist Church Centre.
I would particularly like to thank the following staff for all their planning and preparation for these wonderful events: Mr Curtis Stone, Ms Emma Pangrazio, Mrs Deb Clarke, Ms Deb Hill, Ms Julie Young, Mrs Helen Sugameli, Mr Travis Pearce, Senior House Coordinators (Mrs Mona Esmaty, Mr Terry Luppino, Mr Anthony Barnhoorn, Mr Nathan Bradbury, Mrs Julie Barnhoorn, Mr Paul Ribet, Mrs Sharon Marshall, Mr Lance Albrecht), Assistant House Coordinators (Ms Alanna Castelli, Mr Sam Noonan, Mrs Ciara Roberts and Mrs Laura Roberts) and Senior Home Room Teachers; Mr Matthew Williams, Mrs Kathleen Ronchi and members of the Faith Team; Mrs Jodie Williams, Mrs Stacey Brown as well as Mr Ricardo Luis, Mrs Luke Christiansen, Mr David Patterson, Mr Rohan Cameron, Mr Aaron Utber and the Maintenance Team; Mrs Kathleen Williams, Ms Di Lewis and Mr Matt Crosling.
It was also wonderful to have Fr Geoff McIlroy and Fr Jude Ezeme (St Macartan’s), Fr John McInty OMI and Fr Angelo Wijewickrama OMI (St Mary’s Star of the Sea Parish Priest and Deacon Graeme Pender celebrate the Graduation Mass for us.
Each year the FMPLLEN hosts the VCAL Awards to celebrate the achievements of students, schools and industry partners and recognise the work in the Applied Learning field of education.
This year an Excellence Award was presented to Hannah Lionnet of Mercy House.
And an Encouragement Award was presented to Tai Frier of MacKillop House.
This year Padua College awarded two students The Global Citizenship Award for their commitment and performance in the United Nations Youth Evatt competition where they received a highly commended award in the Victorian finals and will be representing Victoria in the National finals in December; and for their outstanding performance in the Rotary Model United Nations Assembly for winning the Perpetual Trophy and the Peace Prize. The winners were Conor Kingston of Bernard House and Flynn Goerlitz of Francis House.
This award is presented to a student who not only achieved success beyond Padua in their chosen sport, but also contributed significantly to the sporting culture of the College through their involvement in the sporting opportunities offered at Padua. This year’s recipient is Harry Geary of Elizabeth House who has excelled at both a national and international level in the area of Speed Skating.
This award is presented to a student who has set a great example to the remainder of the school community by consistently displaying good sportsmanship, a willingness to get involved, leadership, and a commitment to Padua sporting teams throughout their time at the College. This year’s recipient has been involved in junior rally days, the swimming, cross country, and athletics carnivals for six years, SIS weekly sport, and much much more. The winner is William Deutsher of Elizabeth House.
The recipient of this Award for 2023 goes to a person who lives and breathes all areas of the Performing Arts. Not just in Year 12 but across all six years of their Padua journey, they have become a part of the furniture in this department. The Performing Arts Department has selected the 2023 Performing Arts Award to go to Lilah Jenkins of Merton House.
This Award is presented to a dedicated member of the Padua College Music Department. The winner has willingly and joyously served the Padua music community over their school journey, regularly supporting those around them. The 2023 winner is Samuel Westworth of Bernard House.
Melanie Holden (1972 – 2004) is a past student of Padua College who completed Year 12 in 1989. This award is given annually to a young woman from Year 11 or 12 who combines an avid interest in surfing with diligence in her studies. The 2023 winner is Sarsha Pancic of Djeembana House.
This award is given in recognition of Sue Lash, a staff member of Padua College for 22 years who was actively involved in both Careers and VET at both the Mornington and Rosebud Campuses. The Sue Lash Award recognises a student who reflects the perseverance and positive use of VET as part of their career journey. The winner is Rose Delaney of Francis House.
Presented by the College, the “Mick McLoughlin Principal’s Choice” acknowledgment is given in memory of Mr Michael McLoughlin (1943 – 2012) who in 27 years at Padua College was Deputy Principal and inaugural Head of Rosebud Campus.
This acknowledgment is given annually to a Year 11 or 12 student who has produced an outstanding piece of work in the Arts Learning Area and to a Year 11 or 12 student who has produced an outstanding piece of work in the Technology Learning Area as part of their portfolio work for the VCE or VET course.
The winners are Airlee Sheehan of Mercy House for Art and Irene Winderlich of Mercy House for Technology.
The Australian Defence Force is acknowledging and encouraging the next generation of innovators, critical thinkers, and problem solvers. The ADF Future Innovators Award is awarded to a Year 12 student who demonstrates innovation in the learning area of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths). The recipient also demonstrates a level of high motivation in the learning area of STEM. The winner of the ADF Young Innovator Award for 2023 is Alex Glover of Mercy House.
ADF Long Tan Youth Leadership & Teamwork Award
This Award recognises students who demonstrate leadership and teamwork within both the school and the broader community and who display strong values, such as 'doing one’s best', exemplary leadership, respect for others and “mateship”, which are integral to Australian society. The winner of the ADF Youth Leadership & Teamwork Award for 2023 is Kate McInnes of Francis House.
The Tyler Shaw Memorial Award is presented in memory and honour of Tyler Shaw (1993 – 2013) a past VCAL student of Padua College. Tyler had a zest for life and lived her short life to the fullest. Tyler’s story is shared with many students on the Mornington Peninsula through the DRIVE 4 LIFE program, TRAG. This award is given to a VCAL student who shows determination, strength and the will to live their life to the fullest. The winner of the Tyler Shaw Memorial Award for 2023 is Nicholas Anderson of John XXIII House.
The short-listed nominees for the 2023 Principal’s General Excellence Award were: Amelia Barrette, William Deutsher. Mackenzie Dornom, Flynn Goerlitz, Patrick Hosking, Kate McInnes, Lilah Jenkins and Bethany Passmore.
On Wednesday evening at the Year 12 Graduation Celebration, I was pleased to announce the winner of the Principal’s General Excellence Award for 2023: Kate McInnes of Frances House. Congratulations to Kate on receiving this Award.
The written VCE Exams commenced this week and I am sure all parents and members of the College community will join with me in wishing our VCE students good luck during the exam period. I also extend my thanks and appreciation to all our teachers at Padua College who have worked with our Year 12 students over their educational journey to prepare them for the VCE exams.
The Year 10 and Year 11 Exam period will commence on the Wednesday after the Melbourne Cup Weekend and will conclude on Thursday 16 November. I wish all senior students well as they prepare for these important assessments that assist them as they move towards Year 12.
Friday 17 November will be an Assessment and Reporting Day for teaching staff and as such there are no scheduled classes for this day. The following Monday 20 November is when all students will commence our Headstart Program and all students will have a full two-week cycle of their 2024 classes prior to the final day for students for 2023 on Friday 1 December.
Last week we welcomed students from some of our Catholic Partner Primary Schools to the Mornington Campus to participate in the inaugural Padua Academic Challenge. This was a great day with students competing in a number of tasks that stretched them academically. Congratulations to the winning team from Year 7 at the Mornington Campus of Padua College with the team from St Macartan’s Primary School coming second. I extend my thanks to Mr Andrew Ferguson (M) for organising this day.
Last Friday we welcomed our Year 9 students from each of the three Campuses to the Mornington Campus for their Year 9 into 10 Transition Day. This was an important day for our Year 9 students as they prepare to join the Senior School next year and I thank our Transition Coordinator, Mr Phil Helisma, along with the Head of the Year 10 – 12 Campus, Mr Curtis Stone, for their organisation of this day.Next week all of our Year 9 students will participate in the second Aspire9 Focus Week for 2024. This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to push themselves outside their comfort zone and I wish them all the best for their Focus Week. I would like to sincerely thank all staff who are attending the Focus Week camps and activities, as well as those staff who remain on campus and support the continuation of classes. I would particularly like to thank the Director of Aspire9, Mr Mark De Fazio, along with the Campus Aspire9 Coordinators, Mrs Charlene Smith (M), Mrs Andrew Cummins (R) and Ms Chelsea Holmes (T), for all their work in preparation for these focus weeks.
