Dear families,

Modd Lisa

LISA MODD

CO-DIRECTOR, ROSEBUD CAMPUS

As we enter the warmer weather, it is time to pull out and dust off the summer uniform. It is a timely reminder that perhaps your child has grown and will need to have the hem taken down on their dress. However, your child may still prefer to wear the full winter uniform until Term Four due to Melbourne weather.

Luckily, we had a lovely morning last Friday for our Special Persons breakfast. Ari and Zaya did an amazing job entertaining us with their musical items. Events such as these remind us that we belong to a beautiful school community.

Teachers are in the process of completing Term Three interim reports. These will be available on 20 September in PAM. All Year 7 and 8 students will commence their next round of capabilities subjects on Monday 9 September.

This week we are celebrating and engaging in R U OK? week, 9-13 September. During this week we will be reminding our students to check in with each other and ask, “Are you ok?” as well as what to do if, after a meaningful conversation, they learn that someone is not ok. There will be a variety of activities on offer throughout both break times, from mindful colouring, basketball comp, trivia, to also trying to beat our librarian, and former Pro Australian table tennis player Mr Paul Egan at his game.

Finally, a massive thank you to all Rosebud families for the way you navigated our extreme weather warning and subsequent online learning day on Monday 2 September.

We wish you all a restful term break when it arrives, and for those families heading off on holidays, we wish you safe travels.

God bless.

Year 8 Religion

Students have used their growing investigative and analytical skills in a number of areas this year. They have looked at Catholic Traditions and worked to form a personal stance on several local and worldwide issues. They have debated the differences between justice and fairness, with a particular emphasis on learning about Jesus’ social justice. This allowed them the opportunity to explore the Gospel messages in more detail.

They have had opportunities throughout the year to be creative in various units of work. The students made booklets for younger students that explained a number of sacraments, and their importance.

Students examined how Christianity and the message of Jesus spread, starting with St Paul, and studied the Eastern Churches. They made their own icons and were able to explain the significance of the colours and symbols they used. They realised that icons were more than pictures, but conveyed a story and message to those who viewed them.

The students moved on to examine in more detail the teaching stories that assisted people in learning about Jesus’ messages. Their chance to be creative in this unit of work was in designing and writing their own parable stories.

The Year 8 units of work have allowed the students to learn, and use, many skills. It has also given them the opportunity to learn more about the initial growth of Christianity and how it has spread around the world. The creative elements have allowed them to explore, question, examine, and grow their own beliefs in an accessible way.

Year 8 Geography

Our Year 8 students are studying Geography this semester and are having a great time looking at landforms, including geohazards such as volcanoes this term. To enhance this unit of study, Mrs Paxino's Humanities students have constructed volcanoes using recycled PET bottles and cardboard. Students simulated an ‘explosion’ using bicarbonate soda, vinegar, dishwashing liquid, and red food colouring. Students recorded observations of their ‘lava flows’ and will be using this data to describe the impact that geohazards have on human populations and natural environments.

RSL Commemorative Poetry Competition

The Southern Peninsula Region RSL Commemorative Poetry Competition is spearheaded by the Rosebud RSL, and was inspired by our competition ambassadors, Jet and Eva Angus, Rosebud Campus students who each read their poems at local RSL ceremonies on Remembrance Day. This competition offers students in the Southern Peninsula the opportunity to honour the service and sacrifice of the brave Australians who have served; from the ANZACs in the First World War, through to the present day.

Further information and entry forms can be found on the Learning & Teaching page via the link below

RSL Commemorative Poetry Competition

Science Week

Rosebud Campus celebrated Science Week, 10-18 August, with fun activities organised by Mrs Trewin, and a fun ‘Mad About Science' incursion that helped students understand the key scientific concepts such as element reactivity, states of matter, the fire triangle, exothermic reactions, electricity, atomic structure and the effects of heating and cooling, with an amazing chemistry demonstration.

Reading is Magic

Magic was the theme of this year’s Book Week at Rosebud Library we had magic galore. Our Science teacher, Ms Kirstin Trewin ran a ‘magic science experiment’, there was a magic trick workshop, daily morning homeroom quizzes, and a scavenger hunt organised by the book club. Various competitions ran throughout the week and winners were able to choose their prize from a treasure chest of goodies.

SIS Book in a Day Competition

Student Reflections

Padua Rosebud recently competed in the SIS Book in a Day competition at Balcombe College. Six writers from years 7-9, Milly S, Maisie T, Henry MH, Elizabeth M, Marlee B and Lachy H, and two illustrators, Trudy R and Leni R worked together to create their book, “Moonlight Bite”. Together, they worked from prompts provided by other schools to plan, write, illustrate, and publish their story all in one day. We will need to wait until October for our results, but there will be a copy in the library if you would like to read our team’s story.

We got to meet three authors James Phelan, Crystal Corocher, and Danielle Binks who all spoke about the writing, editing and publishing process giving us small tips and tricks on writing characters, settings and plots. Many schools attended the workshop and the main highlights for the day were the Danielle Binks workshop, where she discussed settings and some of the common rules in writing while also discussing her love for writing fanfiction when she was younger which inspired her writing for books. Another highlight of the day was James Phelan outlining the writing and drafting process of a book. The illustrators had lots of fun drawing with Luke Tyrrell, who gave them speed drawing prompts, which all turned out amazing and helped prepare them for the story.
