CO-DIRECTOR, ROSEBUD CAMPUS
We hope that you all had a chance to enjoy some sunshine over the weekend. We have now made the transition to summer uniform, however, due to the unstable weather conditions, students are still permitted to wear their winter uniform for the remainder of this term. Congratulations to our former Rosebud student, Oscar Donnelly, on becoming one of the 2024 College Captains. Such a massive achievement and very well deserved. We hope that you all have a lovely break when it arrives. Please enjoy the following articles that have been written and sourced by our editing team of Kaitlyn, Ava, Lily and Edith.
In Science, the Year 9 students have been able to participate in eye and heart dissections. They were excited to be able to experiment with the anatomy of a cow’s eye and a sheep’s brain. It was a really fun experience to have the freedom of dissecting an eye or brain within a small group or partnership. Students were given the opportunity to sit out or leave the classroom if they weren’t comfortable with the procedure, although many chose to stay and contribute to the dissection.

One of our very talented students, Zaya Donegan, Year 7 Goold, created this spectacular piece for Book Week. From the 19-25 August, Book Week activities were run in the library, and the theme this year was ‘Read, Grow, Inspire’. Zaya’s representation of the theme within the piece of art is incredible and very creative. It would have taken a lot of hard work to complete, especially to execute it at such an exceptional standard. Well done!
On Wednesday 30 August, all the Year 9 students participated in an eXcel workshop day from a foundation called Seed. They were all split gender-wise to create a more comfortable space for them all and went to different community centres to have a day filled with educational activities. They covered topics of consent, self-esteem and respectful relationships. It would have been a very eye-opening experience for many as they spent the day doing intensive activities for each of these topics.
The Padua SIS Book in a Day team, consisting of eight Padua Rosebud students, spent a fun and productive day creating a book. After a couple of previous practice days, the group assembled to write and illustrate the book. They were given prompts of “a broken heart, desert and betrayal, among other things” and started working on it almost immediately. The workload is divided between the artists and the writers and the experience is a positive opportunity for discussion among friends with communal creativity. Feedback from students that participated was favourable and they highly recommend the activity for students interested in producing a book in a day.
A selection of Year 9 students from across all three Padua Campus cohorts took part in a day of learning and finding how you can be a hero in your own life.
The Hero Day program was a constantly engaging program. We went through some very serious matters such as the statistics of suicide in Australia or the amount of families with someone with a disability, which I relate to the most. But they also had a lot of fun activities like who could scooch on their butt across the stage the fastest. The staff made it so engaging as well. Jack was one of the staff and his intro was 'Two truths and a lie'. Spoiler alert, he has the world record for the longest basketball game and he's afraid of the Pelicans. The audience was constantly given a chance to speak if they wanted, I personally did speak once, but tried many more times. It was a day full of interesting subjects and cool fun facts. The only purpose of this was so that everyone understood what people can and are currently going through and that you should be respectful to everyone because you don't know what they are going through.

We've now concluded our SIS sports season for the term. This term we had Junior Boys and Girls Football and Intermediate Girls Netball and Boys Soccer and we invited a few participants to share their thoughts on their experience of SIS sport.
"We won three out of five of our games. Out of the ones we won, we smashed the other teams by 30 goals. It was a great experience to be with the girls especially as for most people it will be the last SIS sport at Rosebud Campus. But yeah, overall, it was a great and fun experience."
Ava James, Intermediate Girls Netball
"It was all pretty lit. We won two out of the four games. We were meant to have another but missed it due to a day off school. Mr Chappel was a really great coach. I would definitely recommend this, it was a great experience."
Johnny Gallagher (Intermediate Boys Soccer)
On 31 August, two of our Year 8 classes went down to Rye to participate in a Mass with Mr O’Halloran and Mrs Cox. We asked Rosie McInnes and Spencer Jones for their thoughts.
How did you find it?
Spencer: Good and very welcoming
Rosie: Exciting
What did you enjoy about it?
Spencer: The priest sang so that was fun and cool. First row was certainly something.
Rosie: The priest was really nice and he addressed us at the end which I thought was really good. Mrs Cox, who is our teacher, was really helpful and explained everything before it happened.
Our Technology Department is seeking broken skateboard decks and surfboard resin run off that can be repurposed by our Year 9 Jewellery students to create a series of ‘upcycled’ jewellery.
Skateboard decks made from coloured and stacked wood, can be turned into stylish and vibrant pieces of jewellery (pictured below) when cut and shaped. The Year 9 Jewellery students also upcycle the waste polyester resin caught while laminating a surfboard, which is usually sent to landfills. The students use these leftovers to cut out shapes and style them into jewellery with bright swirls of colours.
If any families in the community make custom surfboards or know of people who do, we would be grateful if you could email Vicky in our Technology Department, vronchi@padua.vic.edu.au
Donations of broken skateboards would be gratefully accepted by our Wood Technology teachers.
