It has been an exciting and productive first half of the year, culminating with our mid-year awards assembly, where students were celebrated for their academic excellence and achievements (also recognised in this edition of the Paduan).
Likewise, terms three and four promise to be engaging and enriching, with many new learning opportunities and extra-curricular activities designed to continue to grow our young people academically, socially and emotionally.
Below, several of our wonderful Tyabb students share highlights from the most recent events, along with some of the wonderful achievements and projects that have been taking place around campus and beyond, throughout these first few weeks of term three.
The Tyabb and Rosebud Campuses came together on Thursday 1 August for our House Athletics Day. There were many events on the track and field, and everyone had fun cheering on our Houses and peers. It was so good to see everyone getting involved to try something new and get points for the total winning House, which when the scores were added up for the Tyabb Campus, was Cardin House.

On Friday 26 July, four debating teams left Tyabb to compete in their first debate. The day consisted of two debates for each team, one prepared and one unprepared. The topic for the intermediate prepared debate was ‘that technology is having a negative effect on student learning’. Both Intermediate teams won the first round as well as one of the Junior teams. An unprepared debate is where you get the topic for the debate on the day, giving you about an hour to prepare. Our Intermediate 1 and Junior 1 teams both made it through to the semi-finals on 6 September.

On Monday 22 July, the Year 7 and 8’s had the amazing opportunity to listen to our local police talk about the important lessons of cyber safety. We learnt about the impact of bullying online and how the online world can have such a toll on our wellbeing and mental health. We also learnt about how to keep our personal lives out of the global internet and be critical thinkers. We also covered the big issue about learning how to say no and stand up for ourselves and others. Remember to always talk to trusted friends or adults if you have any issues or rising problems online.

The Padua Junior State Championship netball team had an awesome day playing netball at Jubilee Park, winning all eight games and moving on to the State Netball Championships finals later in August. Everyone had a blast, giving their all and working together brilliantly in attack, mid, and defence. A big shoutout to Miss Bailey for her fantastic coaching!

Mass
On Tuesday 23 July, we celebrated Cardijn's Feast Day. Joseph Cardijn was most known for his dedication to social activism and working towards the improvement of the working class. He was also known for starting the Y.C.W. Which was established in 60 different countries by 1950.
We had a Mass, led by Father Shymon, and it was lovely to have the Father come and lead our celebration at Tyabb Campus.
Waiting for us at the end of the mass was a delicious surprise. As we lined up, I could smell the delectable aroma of hot chips. Mrs Scheen was worried there wouldn't be enough, but just like the loaves and fishes story in the Bible, there was more than enough for everyone.
A big thanks to Ms Wilkinson, Mrs Scheen and Mr Agg for organising the event.
Our Cardijn motto is "See, Judge, Act", so we encourage everyone to observe the situation, make a judgement on it, and take action by considering the teachings of Joseph Cardijn.

The Cows Create Careers program was introduced to the Year 9 Tyabb Plant & Animal class as a fun way to learn about both cows and the dairy industry. As part of the class, we went on an excursion to the Caldermeade Farm and learnt all about the processes of cow rearing and milk production. We toured several of the farm’s facilities such as the calf shed and the paddocks where we got to get close to and feed the cows. The whole day was both a very fun and educational excursion. Back in class we took care of Daisy and Maisy who were our own lovely calves. Throughout the week they were with us we learned to feed and take care of them. It was a very sad goodbye, but we thoroughly enjoyed the experience of learning about and caring for little calves. As part of the assignment, the class all made presentations in small groups which were also submitted to the Cows Create Careers contest consisting of either a 3D model or a video, a creative photo, and a letter to the person running the program. The Moo Crew has made it through to the national level of the Contest.

In class today we had a Math Olympics. It was super fun and really brought out a different way of thinking. There were some very confusing questions and some easy questions. To get into the Olympic spirit we all split up into groups and collectively chose the country that we wanted. Today was super fun but the best part of it was that there were no participation awards.

The Travelling Theatre Group
The Travelling Theatre Troupe is one of many Aspire9 electives offered. This class encourages everyone to embrace their dramatic side and create a performance that we eventually act out to a local primary school. Everyone was given opportunities to take up roles, like Director or Hair and Makeup. We also had our roles in the performance and then learned our lines. We learned how to act and memorise a script. This intensive elective helps us to meet new people and embrace drama. It's a really good experience!
Jade Ross, Year 9 Geoghegan
In the first lesson of the upcycled fashion intensive elective, the class sewed patchwork pieces made out of materials from the Red Hill Op Shop. We then sewed those patches onto a tote bag made out of old sheets. We also had a class discussion about fast fashion and the impact textile waste has on the world and environment.

Intermediate Boys SIS Soccer On Friday 26 July, the Year 9 Boys, from the Tyabb Campus, played their first game of soccer for SIS. We travelled by bus to play at Ballam Park against Casey High School. In the first half of the game, Casey High School were leading 4-0. Unfortunately, they were too skilled for us and we thought we were done for. In the second half we started to come back, Charlie Beggs scored three goals. We only let the other team score one goal in the second half thanks to Max Fawcett who was our goalkeeper. The final score was 5-3 Casey’s way. Charlie Beggs was chosen Player of the Game after scoring that amazing hat trick. We all had fun, and we are looking forward to playing our next up and coming games against Bayside, Woodleigh, then we have a bye. Finally, to finish off the term, we play St Peters, Clyde. I had a lot of fun playing with all my mates and I look forward to playing the rest of the matches.
Will Wigley, Year 9 Cardijn
On Friday 26 July, we had our first game of SIS Netball for the Year 9 Girls. Remy was amazing in goals and Eden was excellent in defence. We collectively played a great game. Our teamwork all throughout the game was incredible and everyone contributed towards our win. We had a 42-point win with the final scores landing Padua on 48 and Nazareth on 6.
Georgia Stephenson, Year 9 McCormack, and Ruby Lawler, Year 9 Geoghegan
The students at Padua Tyabb have been extremely proactive and have assisted with the creation of our very first Dungeons & Dragons Club. Our campaign will be set in Melbourne where students will face trials and challenges with their own unique characters. Our first introductory session had 26 students and three teachers, which was an amazing turnout. With such a high number of participants, there will be multiple groups running the same campaign at different times throughout the week. Our club is gearing up for a fantastic term of gaming!
