MATTHEW WILLIAMS
VICE PRINCIPAL MISSION, IDENTITY, COMMUNITY
On 20 June we celebrated as a whole College community on our Mornington site - Padua Day. The actual feast day of St Anthony of Padua is 13 June but this was the closest date that best suited Padua College. I have had to explain to some people adverse to the cold that we wouldn’t celebrate Easter in September! Although in winter the day was a cracker. Starting with a Camino Walk around our beautiful surrounds while being told the story of St Anthony of Padua, a humble Franciscan.
The central element of our Padua Day was the celebration of Mass. This year we are privileged to have the mass led by Bishop Tony Ireland, whose father attended Padua College supported by our Peninsula priests.
In the afternoon, students then enjoyed a festival-style atmosphere with more than 30 activities on offer. All monies raised on the day went towards St Vincent de Paul on the Mornington Peninsula. For more visit our Padua Day report.
Our student Social Justice team is in the midst of their annual COAT drive as part of the Vinnies Winter Appeal. We all have that one jacket/coat that we do not wear anymore/not in trend so please donate them to Padua College. Have someone leave them on the back of a chair in the St Francis of Assisi Chapel or to admins on the Rosebud and Tyabb campuses. Last year we collected over 100…they want to beat that!
On 16 July all staff will come together to continue their learning journey around what it means to work in a Catholic place of learning. This year we are being guided by 2024 Principals' Association of Victorian Catholic Secondary Schools visiting scholar - Ernesto Valiente, Associate Professor of Systematic Theology, Boston College. We will learn:
A Spirituality of Liberation
This presentation will draw from contemporary Latin American liberation theology to develop a spirituality of liberation—that is, a following of Jesus in today’s world. After outlining the criticisms that liberation theologians have made to traditional spiritualties, it examines the basic assumptions of a spirituality of liberation and what it means to encounter God in everyday life and in history.
Jesus’ Identity and Mission
After briefly examining the contemporary historical approach to studying Jesus, this presentation, turns to Jesus’ early life, his possible self-understanding, and his relationship to John the Baptist. Then, it focuses on Jesus’ ministry and central project: God’s Reign.
