Season of Excellence

At Padua College, excellence is not just recognised - it is celebrated with pride, passion, and purpose. Our students continue to push boundaries, redefine success, and embody the spirit of determination in every facet of their learning journey. Whether through academic mastery, creative expression, leadership, or the quiet resilience to improve every day, their achievements shine as beacons of inspiration.

Earlier this term, the College gathered for the annual High Achievers Assembly, an event that stood as a testament to the dedication, perseverance, and brilliance of our students. This occasion honoured those who demonstrated outstanding commitment and success in their chosen studies, culminating in remarkable achievements in the VCE Examinations. But beyond the awards and accolades, this event was a powerful reminder of the collective effort that fuels excellence - an effort made possible by the unwavering dedication of our exceptional academic staff. Their commitment to fostering a culture of learning and aspiration is invaluable, and their influence in shaping the future of our students deserves the highest recognition.

Equally, behind every student’s triumph is a network of unwavering support—families who encourage, uplift, and believe in their children’s potential. The High Achievers Assembly was also a celebration of the parents and guardians who, through sacrifice and steadfast guidance, have played an essential role in their child’s success. Their belief and commitment serve as the foundation upon which students build their aspirations and achieve their dreams.

With such an extraordinary collective spirit of ambition, support, and perseverance, the High Achievers Assembly was not just a moment of recognition—it was a call to action for every student to embrace their own journey with courage, resilience, and an unrelenting drive to be the best they can be.

Top Designs

One of the most prestigious recognitions for young designers, engineers, and media creators in Victoria is the Top Designs exhibition, an annual showcase at the Melbourne Museum. This exhibition features exemplary student work from VCE Media, Product Design and Technologies, Systems Engineering, Theatre Studies, and Visual Communication Design. The selection process is rigorous, acknowledging students who demonstrate creativity, innovation, technical skill, and conceptual depth.

This year, Caitlin Bouwmeester was selected to exhibit her work in Top Designs 2025 for Visual Communication Design. This achievement is a testament to Caitlin’s talent, dedication, and hard work. We also extend our gratitude to her teacher, Mrs Christine Blake, for her guidance and support. This recognition highlights Caitlin’s exceptional ability in design and her commitment to excellence.

Honouring the Year 7-11 Duxes of the College

The College also celebrated the achievements of its Dux recipients, who represent the highest level of academic success for 2024. To be named Dux is not solely about results—it reflects a student’s commitment, intellectual curiosity, and drive to push beyond limits.

Excellence at Padua College is not confined to academic success; it can be found in the classroom, on the sporting field, in the arts, or through service to others. The journey of our Dux recipients highlights that success is not about perfection but about perseverance, passion, and a willingness to challenge oneself.

The Dux of the College for Years 7–11 were formally acknowledged at their respective campus assemblies in Term 4 last year. However, the High Achievers Assembly provided a wonderful opportunity to celebrate their remarkable accomplishments as a whole school community.

Recognising 2024 VCE High Achievers

A key highlight of the assembly was the recognition of students who achieved a study score of 40 or higher in their VCE subjects. A study score of 40+ places a student in approximately the top 9% of all students in Victoria who completed that subject—an extraordinary accomplishment that reflects not only intelligence but also dedication, endurance, and a strong work ethic.

These students' achievements represent countless hours of study, a deep commitment to learning, and the ability to rise to challenges with resilience and determination. Their hard work serves as a powerful example to their peers, demonstrating what is possible with focus and perseverance.

Understanding the ATAR and its Significance

The assembly also highlighted the significance of the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR). The ATAR is not a score but a ranking, designed to determine a student’s position relative to their peers across Australia. It is calculated on a scale from 0 to 99.95 in increments of 0.05, providing universities with a standardised measure of academic performance.

An ATAR of 90 or above places a student in the top 10% of all students in the country. This remarkable achievement reflects dedication, resilience, and intellectual curiosity. A high ATAR opens doors to a wide range of university courses, including highly competitive fields such as medicine, law, engineering, and commerce. The following students were acknowledged for their exemplary achievements in attaining an ATAR of 90+:

ATAR 90+
Candace Walker 90+
Isabel York 90+
Audrey Sprague 90.1
Hollie Whitty 91.45
Sahar Pnini 91.5
Sienna Whyte 92.0
Taylor Keating 92.35
Caitlin Wallace 92.55
Jack Galvin 93.1
Jonathon Turner 93.45
Georgia Cooke 93.7
Perry Maher 93.8
Maya Denvir 94.1
Caitlin Bouwmeester 95.5
Fin Fawcett 96.75
Ella Michie 96.8
Amelie Campbell 97.15
Laura Kemp 97.55
Reese Fischer 98.55

Congratulations William Edwards
2024 Year 12 Dux of Padua College

An event that showcased and celebrated high achievements, the culmination had Principal Ms Kelly McGurn proudly introduced our Year 12 Dux, William Edwards, who achieved an outstanding ATAR of 99.0. Addressing the audience, he shared valuable reflections on his journey through school, offering insights beyond just study techniques. He emphasised the importance of balance—maintaining friendships, hobbies, and exercise to ensure wellbeing alongside academic pursuits. Encouraging students to pursue subjects they genuinely enjoy, William highlighted the significance of consistency and self-awareness in overcoming challenges. He also spoke about the dangers of comparison, urging students to focus on their own progress rather than measuring themselves against others. In closing, William expressed gratitude to his family, friends, and teachers who supported him throughout his journey, reminding students to appreciate the time they have at school and make the most of their opportunities. William’s words served as a powerful reminder that success is not just about hard work, but about resilience, passion, and perspective.

2025 is the year of YOU!
Inspiring a Year of Growth and Excellence

As we reflect on the outstanding achievements celebrated at the High Achievers Assembly, let this moment serve as inspiration for every student at Padua College. The success of our Duxes, our VCE high achievers, and those who attained ATARs of 90+ is not simply the result of talent—it is the product of perseverance, dedication, and a commitment to personal growth.

A new academic year is a fresh opportunity—a chance to reset, refocus, and strive for our personal best. Whether last year was filled with triumphs or challenges, today marks a new beginning. In this Jubilee Year, the time has never been better to break free from old habits, shed the weight of doubt, and embrace a mindset of determination, resilience, and self-improvement.

Excellence is not about being perfect; it is about giving your best in every moment, in every subject, and in every challenge. It is about showing up with curiosity, courage, and a willingness to push past limitations. This year is the year to take ownership of learning, be prepared, develop stronger study habits, seek help when needed, and find joy in the process of growth.

Guiding us through this year is the College theme for 2025: Resolve to be good today, but better tomorrow. This message reminds us that success is built step by step, day by day. Every effort made today lays the foundation for an even stronger tomorrow. It is not about perfection but about progress—choosing to grow, to improve, and to strive for something greater with each new challenge.

To all students—believe in your potential. The possibilities before you are endless, and each of you has the capacity to achieve greatness in your own unique way. Step forward with vigour, embrace the challenges, and make the most of every opportunity that comes your way.

May this year be one of transformation, success, and fulfilment. Resolve to be good today, but better tomorrow. Make it a year to remember!
