Dear families,

Helisma Phil

PHILLIP HELISMA

CO-DIRECTOR OF ROSEBUD CAMPUS

We have enjoyed a very positive start to the school year, which has been reflected in a great spirit of collaboration between teachers and students. Significant events to date have included Ash Wednesday liturgy, Year 7 Respectful Relationship sessions, and a Year 8 eXcel day, which included sessions on the dangers of alcohol, drugs and vaping. The day also included an indigenous focus on bush tucker and sustainability and the environment. The students were asked to focus on social awareness and respectful language.

The Aspire9 team has already provided some memorable experiences outside of the classroom which have included escaping the recent heat by hopping on the boat Polpero and having the chance to swim with dolphins and seals.

Our new student leadership structure will allow students to contribute to the life of the College and establish links with the wider community. The leadership structure involves the following portfolios:

House Leader, Academic Captain, Performing Arts Captain, Mission Captain, Sustainability Captain, Visual Arts Captain and Peer Mentors. We are currently in the process of selecting a Year 8 SRC Member for each House and will appoint a Year 7 representative following the Year 7 camp.

The Year 7 camp at Ferngully Lodge in Healesville took place this week and we look forward to the students sharing their experiences in the next Paduan.

Thank you to the many parents who attended our House Welcome evening on Tuesday 20 February. The night was a great opportunity to welcome families to the campus and continue the educational journey.

The following reports are compiled by our students.

Student Leadership

Padua College Rosebud is seeing some exciting new leadership as we venture into 2024. As of 2024, Padua has implemented four new leadership roles, as well as changing a few of the old ones to accommodate our ever-growing Paduan community. We now call these leadership groups, portfolio groups. For each House, across all year levels, we have House Captains, Sport Captains, a Mission Captain, Academic Captains, Visual Arts Captains, Performing Arts Captains and Sustainability Captains. Each of the captains will work very closely with their assigned portfolio leader to ensure that every Paduan uses their God-given talents to be the best that they can be.

House Captains

My name is Nina Perri, one of the Anthony House Captains, and I am so lucky to be a captain with my fellow student leaders. With the amazing opportunity we have been given, the House Captains will strive to set the best example we can for the younger students of Padua. We wish to support everyone in our House, whether it be a sports event or an academic achievement.

Academic Captains

Another portfolio is Academic captains. These captains will organise study groups and special events to help everyone be the best version of themselves. We all look forward to being your leaders this year!

Sports Captains

This year at Padua Rosebud Campus, we have two Sports Captains for each house. For Teresa House, we have Caitlin Ingram and Jimmy Irons. For McAuley House, we have Sara Osorio and Oscar Skehan. For Anthony House, we have Thomas Tuff and Liana Inglese and for Goold House, we have Tahli Browne and Blake Walshe.

The role of our Sports Captains is to encourage and promote students to actively engage in a variety of activities within the College community. They will work collaboratively with the key sports staff to explore new opportunities for students to be active and engaged.

Performing Arts Captains

This year at Padua Rosebud Campus, we have one Performing Arts Captain for each House. For Teresa House, we have Jamie Tonkin. For McAuley House, we have Emily Bath. For Anthony House, we have Aleese Fergus and for Goold House, we have McKenzie Dalziel. The role of the Performing Arts Captain is to encourage active participation in performing arts and to play a lead role in organising activities. To promote performance and artistic endeavours through drama and music, the captains must possess a deep understanding of the arts, a passion for creativity, and effective management skills. They are responsible for setting the artistic direction, cultivating a positive and collaborative environment, and ensuring the overall success of their productions. They will take the lead in organising and coordinating performances, showcases, open nights, bands, lunch time performances and other events to enable students to display their artistic talents within the College community.

Mission Captains

This year our mission captains will contribute to the faith andmission of the College, and promote the values of justice within the College community. Our goals and ideas for this year would be to have more Padua days, a mass for St Patrick's Day which incorporates a special, ‘wear something green’ day with a gold coin donation to one of the college’s chosen charities. Run a school market as a major fundraiser for Caritas, supporting our mission of compassion and education for all. Hold a student art and photography show that is themed around the college mission of Joy and Hope.

Sustainability

This year our sustainability captains will contribute to helping the environment, and promote sustainability on our school grounds and local beaches. Our goals and ideas for this year would be to have a central collection area for recycling, then once a month take cans and bottles to the Rosebud Recycling depot, using the money to fund a single-use plastic program at school. Create a rubbish warrior program where students can collect as much rubbish from around the school as possible to fill bins labeled with their house names. The school house who fills their bin by the end of the week can participate in an organised special lunchtime activity. Have a clean-up beach day with activities that show us what rubbish does to the coastline and the health of the bay.

We will develop a Padua waste and recycling project, and generate activities that tell us how much waste the college generates and where it goes so we can improve our recycling and composting efforts. We plan to run an upcycle Padua project which involves collecting all classroom scraps, paper, wood, plastic, metals and fabrics to create art projects at school, such as models, mosaics and sculptures.

OUR PLACE BY THE SEA - ASPIRE9

This year's Aspire 9s went to Sorrento. It was quite the experience, after swimming with the seals, attending a marine pep talk and to finish the wonderful day we walked around Sorrento main street.

We got onto the bus from school and arrived in Sorrento. We walked up the pier to meet the boat and changed into our wetsuits and snorkels. As you can imagine, we were very excited to go on the boat and we couldn't wait to get in the water but before we could we of course had to have a little talk about safety. When the time finally did come for us to get in the water, we got to see some extraordinary creatures such as giant starfish, weedy sea dragons, seals, stingray and one special group got to be the first to see the dolphins at the very end.

We got back on the bus and headed to Rye Yacht Cub to attend a very informative presentation on the wildlife there in Sorrento beach. I think it's safe to say that we learnt a lot, like how to track dolphins and with the help of some little group activities we had some good fun. Fun fact: every dolphin's fins are different like our thumbprints!

We then got back on the bus and headed back to school. We left full of adrenaline, excitement, and happiness. All of the year 9’s had a lovely day, got to see some amazing animals, learn more about our wildlife in Port Phillip Bay and have some fun in Sorrento while learning independence skills. Thank you Padua for providing us with this amazing opportunity!
